Rincon de la Vieja National Park
An active volcano with boiling mud ponds, thermal springs, lava
fields and fumaroles. Rain forest trails with plenty of flora and
fauna, waterfalls with natural swimming pools. A good place to spot the
beautiful blue morph butterfly. Nearby lodges offer horseback riding,
canopy tours, mud baths and spa services to the day traveler.

Palo Verde National Park
A birdwatcher's bonanza and an important migratory zone for many
types of waterfowl. River boat rides, mangroves and marshes, crocodiles
and scarlet macaws, and more. Approximately a 90 minute drive from
Santa Rosa National Park
Spectacular deserted beaches, great hiking trails through several
distinct habitats and Witches Rock, the world famous surfing area.
Nesting grounds for the Olive Ridley and leatherback turtles, and
plenty of birds and mammals, including wild cats. Approximately a 75
minute drive from Playa Ocotal.
Las Baulas National Park
Features the largest nesting colony of the giant leatherback turtles in
the Pacific Ocean. From October to February, visitors with reservations
are able to participate in a park-sponsored ecological tour for an
up-close view of female leatherbacks laying their eggs on the beach.
You can also watch the newborns make their struggle from the beach to
the sea. Approximately 90 minutes from Playa Ocotal.
Llanos de Cortez Waterfall
A very special and secluded spot in the middle of nowhere, this
picturesque waterfall is 45 feet wide with a 30 foot drop surrounded by
lush green vegetation, with a large pond at the base and a white sand
beach, ideal for swimming, sunbathing and picnicking. Approximately 1
hour from Playa Ocotal.
Los Pumas Rescue Center
A sanctuary for wild cats including ocelots, jaguars, and plenty of
other rescued animals including white-faced monkeys. Tour and lecture
available for a donation. Approximately 90 minutes from Playa Ocotal.
Guaitil Pottery Village
This small village is home to families who have been carrying on their
craft of using local clay and natural paints to create a wide variety
of pottery in the same beehive ovens that the Chorotega Indians have
used for centuries. You can watch the pottery being made and purchase
directly from the artisan - a special remembrance of your trip to Costa
Rica. Approximately 1 hour from Playa Ocotal.
El Chapernal Ranch
A fascinating look at Guanacaste's cowboy and ranching tradition.
