What to bring

Villa Vista MarVilla Vista Mar has fully equipped kitchens and we supply linens for bed and bath. However, we do ask that you bring beach towels for the beach and for the pool.

Light clothing is all you will need for Playa Ocotal and the nearby beaches. Shorts, t-shirts or polos, and sandals are common at the beaches and in town. All the area restaurants permit causal clothing. We recommend you bring 100% cotton clothing because it's much cooler than synthetics. If you plan to visit the volcanoes or rain forests you will want hiking shoes or boots, lightweight long pants, possibly a long sleeve shirt, and a lightweight rain jacket. If you plan to spend time in San Jose or the mountain regions you might want some warmer clothing.

Villa Vista MarSnorkeling gear can be rented at Playa Ocotal but you may want to bring your own mask and snorkel and just rent the fins. Binoculars are great for viewing the monkeys, birds, and other wild life. You can purchase sunscreen, mosquito repellant, film, etc. in Playas del Coco and elsewhere (but it's generally cheaper in the US and Canada). Electric converters are not needed for North American appliances in Costa Rica.

Villa Vista MarMoney Matters

Almost all merchants in Costa Rica will gladly accept US dollars and most of them give you a favorable daily exchange rate. Dollars can be changed into colones at any bank but be prepared for the possibility of long lines. Gas stations, most restaurants and medium or large hotels accept credit cards. Many small guest houses, including Villa Vista Mar, do not accept credit cards. Also, many merchants in Costa Rica are reluctant to accept travelers checks made out to a third party (this is because the banks require the third party to deposit the travelers checks into their account and put a hold of up to 60 days on the travelers checks). However, banks will gladly cash travelers checks for the owner directly, with proper identification. One of the easiest ways to obtain dollars or colones in Costa Rica is to use your debit card from home. Most, but not all, ATM machines will accept your debit card or credit card.
